Another U.S. administration and fawning media display glaring ignorance of Russian politics and history:
- “for the first time Russia is saying they want a better relationship with the West” – Brian Kilmead, The Brian Kilmead Show, Feb. 18, 2025. How naive but not new. The ghost of Chamberlain’s “Peace in our Time” continues to infect US Disney Diplomats and armchair media. (see: Gorbachev’s Gaslighting – Hoodwinking Western Media this site dated 8/31/2022)
- “Of course Ukraine has to be part of the negotiation, But.. the war has been going for three years.” – Marco Rubio, in apparent (but belated) fear of Ukraine being compared to another Vietnam. Rubio’s unmistakable implication is that ending the war is a higher priority than Ukraine’s territorial integrity or political legitimacy. As a negotiator for the United States Rubio’s a real poker face.
- “A good deal for both sides. A good model” – Heritage Foundation’s Victoria Coates. (Background: educated in Art history came to Casper Weinberger’s attention by blogging her opinions on Red State and her book David’s Sling: A History of Democracy in Ten Works of Art. Not exactly a Jeanne Kirkpatrick.
NOTE to Coates: the Russians have never negotiated “a good deal” for both sides!
- “Things can’t go back to pre-invasion conditions. This is reality and the war needs to stop.” “The conversation is with Russia because they could end the war.” – Ben Domenich; 18 Feb 2025 the Brian Kilmead Show. (whose background includes being fired from The Washington Post for plagiarism and being an unregistered paid “opinion writer” (lobbyist) for the Malaysian government. Well, Ukraine could have won with less US timidity, properly timed support and a resolve to win.
- Not exactly the bona fides of legitimate, foreign diplomats – at least Bush, Jr. had better qualified advisors before involving America in two twenty-year fiascos. Domenich is showing Trump’s hand that Trump wants a “Deal” more than he wants a free and undivided Ukraine. The Russians are gleeful knowing they’ve already won. Their foreign policy has been consistently successful against a feckless, vacillating U.S. State Department since FDR gave Eastern Europe to the communists.
- “Things can’t go back to pre-invasion conditions. This is reality and the war needs to stop.” “He’s (Zalynskyy) been there three years. He could have made a deal. Even a half-baked negotiator could have solved this.” – President Trump is repeating previous administrations practice of giving Pre-negotiation concessions. When asked why Zalynskyy wasn’t involved in the negotiations, Trump – in the height of incredible hubris – threw Zalynskyy under the diplomatic bus.
- While Trump boasted of solving the Ukraine war in a day during his campaign, he didn’t reveal the fact he was going to throw Ukraine to the Russian dogs of war.
- Reagan helped the Mujahadeen kick the Russians out of Afghanistan (and Poland’s Solidarity to kick out Jaruzelski). But Trump can’t help Ukraine kick Russia out of a strip of that country. It’s not due to military incapability. It’s solely due to lack of political will on the part of Trump – he has no stomach for a fight (like Reagan did). Not surprising for a New York City boy.
- “America deserves payback for the billions we sent Ukraine.” – Mike Walz. Since when has America “defending freedom and preserving democracy around the world” had a price tag? Trump is turning US diplomacy from statesmanship to mercenary. Truman (see Truman Doctrine) rebuilt Europe and defeated communism in the. Mediterranean without demanding monetary return. Where’s the reparations demanded from Vietnam? John F. Kennedy is turning over in his grave.
“The war has to end” is the Right’s mantra the same as “constitutional crisis” is the Left’s. It doesn’t come any clearer to the Russians that they have already won – again – because another U.S. administration has broadcasted their negotiation objectives before even sitting down at the table.
When it comes to East West diplomacy, the Russians have historically led the US around like a puppy on a leash. (See: American Policy Failures in Cuba: Dagger in the Heart by Mario Lazo, 1970)
There is an eerie Deja Vu between the U.S. / Russian “peace talks” in Saudi Arabia and the 1973 Paris Peace Accords that guaranteed the de facto elimination of South Vietnam and the extermination of much of a population that fled communist aggression in the ’50s.
- Both Ukraine and South Vietnam had / have reputations for corruption
- Both experienced internal conflict
- Both had / have reputations as “black Holes” financially regarding foreign aid.
- Both countries’ futures will be decided without the voluntary consent of the victimized party relegated to a perfunctory presence at the table simply because the U.S. is tired of supporting the conflict.
- Like Vietnam, Ukraine has been the subject of political vacillations from several U.S. presidents
- Both countries’ futures could have been very different if the US State Department had exercised more preventive statesmanship.
- The US failed to prevent either country from invasion through effective State Department pressure.
- Both countries were abandoned by their Allies – who had plenty of warning of the impending invasion- prior to their invasion: Vietnam by SEATO and Ukraine by NATO.
- Eventually we will see Russian tanks in Kyiv..,the same as in Saigon…and Prague.
If history is precedent, Ukraine will later (after Trump leaves office – like Nixon) be abandoned by a subsequent US administration led by a president with no concern for egotistical legacy when the offending nation (Russia) violates the “treaty” (OMG! ) and takes complete control of the victimized nation. In the not too distant future, communist tanks will again be seen on the world stage rolling into the presidential palace gates after reneging on a treaty – the same as in Saigon…and Prague.
Apparently, the reputation of U.S. presidents is far more important than the freedom of an invaded nation. This after years of failing to not only enable that country to properly defend itself from the initial invasion. but to expel the invader from its internationally recognized border.
Once again the Russians’ renowned reputation for gaslighting another US administration and its fawning media is succeeding.
And, once again, the only winner when all is said and done, is the Political-Military-Industrial-Complex.
Meanwhile, thousands of brave soldiers and tens of thousands of innocent men, women and children will have died in vain fighting to remain free thinking America had its back.
It won’t be the first time. See: The Vietnam Wall

See also: President Trump’s 2019 Pardons, wikipedia. Trump’s “Making the Deal” apparently has no moral compass when it comes to pardoning white collar criminals in exchange for political favor. He apparently thinks scam artists ripping tens of millions off thousands of investors of their life savings is a victimless crime.
Which begs the question: Is it true no one can get rich in New York City (or be elected to public office) – a city vying in corruption with Chicago -without compromising their Principles?
Perhaps Trump’s idea of a “Deal” is to throw Ukraine’s freedom and independence under the bus because he believes he “can work” with the Russians – winning them over to be the world’s largest business partners. If Trump believes that, I have a bridge in Brooklyn for sale.
Proving the adage that money has no conscience.
What a “Deal”.
